Hip Replacement

Hip replacement surgery, otherwise known as hip arthroplasty, provides pain relief and restores movement to individuals with hip stiffness or pain.

Hip arthroplasty might be an option if your hip pain interferes with daily activities and non-surgical treatments are no longer effective.

Do I need a hip replacement?

Conditions that can damage the hip joint may make hip replacement surgery necessary. These conditions include:

Osteoarthritis - Osteoarthritis damages the cartilage that covers the bones and helps joints move properly.
Rheumatoid arthritis - Caused by an overactive immune system, rheumatoid arthritis produces inflammation that can erode cartilage and underlying bone, resulting in damaged and deformed joints.
Osteonecrosis - If there isn't sufficient blood supplied to the ball portion of the hip joint, this might result in a dislocation or fracture, causing the bone to collapse and deform.

Hip replacement surgery (Arthroscopy surgery) may be effective in:

  • Relieving pain
  • Improving stability
  • Repairing tissue tears and damage
  • Removing loose bodies (cartilage or bone spurs)
  • Delaying osteoarthritis
  • Improving function and range of motion
